VSM Chooses SafeNet for Software Licensing and Protection Needs

June 14, 2012

There are as many types of independent software vendors out there as there are types of businesses. In this day and age, every company, from cartographers to car companies, from toy manufacturers to satellite operators need specialized software, and every vendor of software needs to have a strategy in place to protect precious intellectual property. That was the challenge that VSM Software, Ltd., a company that produces very specialized software indeed, was facing. Fortunately, VSM found SafeNet (News - Alert) to help with software monetization and protection needs.

VSM creates computer software for consumer-based embroidery machines, providing solutions for high-end sewing machines manufactured by Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff, keeping the activity fun and exciting for hobbyists and professionals alike. Because the embroidery community is a tight-knit group, members tend to share fonts and designs for embroidery machine software, so VSM needed to be sure that its software, which tended to be low-volume, was not copied in order to protect its revenue stream. In addition, the company needed to be sure that its software protection solution was easy to use for end users, especially for people who were not computer savvy.

Fortunately, VSM already had a strong relationship with SafeNet, a company with more than three decades of experience in the software monetization, licensing and protection space. The best solution for VSM was to use a hardware dongle-based solution, as a physical key is visible and easier for their customers to operate. In addition, hardware dongles can be updated on or offline, which is good, because many VSM customers do not use the Internet.

By implementing the SafeNet Sentinel HASP HL solution, VSM made the software secure and easy to use. Customers buy an embroidery machine, already loaded with basic software. Then, most customers typically purchase specialized software packages, and each of these software packages comes with a Sentinel HASP HL key. The license-generation tools were easy to integrate into VSM’s existing back-office system, which makes it easy for existing customers to buy additional software packages and update their licenses and dongles.

VSM could not be happier with this relationship. “VSM remains a loyal customer of SafeNet because we never have to worry about their products; they always work! SafeNet updates dongles regularly and they are reliable,” said Andrew Kaymer from VSM. “One of the best things about working with SafeNet is that their products allow me to get on with my business and not have to worry about the dongle issues the entire time.”
